Castiglione del Lago

Castiglione del Lago, one of “The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy” for the remarkable artistic heritage, environmental and cultural. The small town of Etruscan origin is located on a promontory on the western shore of Trasimeno Lake. The old town is surrounded by medieval walls with three gates: Perugina, Senese and Fiorentina. To visit is the medieval fortress, built in 1247, that it consists of five towers, three gates and is dominated by the characteristic triangular tower about 30 meters high, from which you can admire a beautiful view of the lake. Of great artistic value is Palazzo della Corgna, built in 1560 is the only small “palace” existing in Umbria. The beautiful rooms, painted by Nicholas Circignani “The Pomarancio” and Salvio Savini, with mythological scenes and businesses of the captain of Ascanio della Corgna.

Città della Pieve, situated in the western part of Umbria, thanks to its scenic location overlooking Trasimeno Lake and the Valdichiana. The small medieval town rich in art, history and culture is home to one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance, Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. The urban form of Citta della Pieve takes the form of an eagle, where the three parts of ‘”eagle” coincide with the three neighborhoods, the administrative subdivisions of the city Terziere Castello, Terziere Borgo Dentro and Terziere Casalino. To visit is the Cathedral of Saints Gervasio and Protasio that preserves the works of two important painters of Città della Pieve, Perugino and Pomarancio. Also interesting is the church of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, where is the beautiful “Adorazione dei Magi”” by Perugino

Magione

Magione, situated in the northwest area of Umbria, is a small village remembered for the beautiful sunsets that can be seen from the eastern shore of Trasimeno Lake. To visit in Magione is Castello dei Cavalieri di Malta, one of the most beautiful in region, perfectly preserved and can be visited only by appointment. The Castle is characterized by a square with circular towers and a beautiful courtyard where, in July, takes place the “Trasimeno Music Festival”, an international festival of classical music. To visit the ancient Tower of Lambardi, a fortress built between the twelfth and thirteenth century as a defensive system, characterized by a rectangular plan and 30 meters high, is located high above the city with a wonderful view of the landscape.

Paciano

Paciano, small medieval town,  is situated on Mount Petrarvella, and is included among the ” The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy “. The old town of Paciano, maintains the characteristic appearance of the medieval village, and is surrounded by a fourteenth-century walls with towers and three gates, Porta Perugina is the entry point and is named as facing Perugia. In addition to the Tower of Orlando, the only remnant left of the oldest castle, you can visit churches from different periods, including the Church of Santa Maria, which dates back to 1014, the Church of San Giuseppe that preserves inside Madonna della Misericordia, painting dating from the late fifteenth century by Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and the Church di San Carlo Borromeo, where you can admire the rich portal seventeenth century and a wooden crucifix of the seventeenth century.

Passignano

Situated on a small promontory, Passignano is located on the north shore of Trasimeno Lake. It takes its original name from “Passus Jani” (Step of Janus) God of the doors, to his own position, that makes it almost obligatory between Umbria and Tuscany. Inhabited by Etruscans and Romans, the territory stopped the troops of Hannibal in 217 BC to decimate the Roman troops, their defeats in the famous battle of Trasimeno. Of considerable artistic and cultural interest is the medieval fortress that, thanks to a terrace on top of the tower 32 meters high, offers a stunning landscape of the Trasimeno and the surrounding hills. Near the structure there is also the Boat Museum, where an exhibition of boats of Trasimeno Lake and Piediluco.

Panicale, defined a natural terrace overlooking Trasimeno Lake, is a medieval village which lies on the hill at the foot of Mount Petrarvella and placed between the valley of Trasimeno  Lake and the valley of the Nestòre River. Besides being one of the ” The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy ” for its natural beauty, history and culture, is also Orange Flag of Italian Touring Club since 2007 thanks to the relevance of its artistic heritage and landscape and numerous events. Panicale retains the typical structure of a medieval castle, with two entrances to and from Florence and Perugia with its three squares, the most significant is definitely Piazza Umberto I, that is the ancient cistern of the country, fifteenth century, which was turned into a fountain in the ‘900 and the majestic Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo.

Piegaro, is situated in the central-western Umbria, it is a small medieval town located on the eastern side of the Nestòre River. To visit is the Ancient glassware of Piegaro, home of the Museum of Glass, which reflects the importance of this activity, present since the Middle Ages, for the economy of the town. Steeped in history and nature is the territory of Piegaro, from Castiglion Fosco, a small medieval village, characterized by the cylindrical tower dating from the fifteenth century, in Cibottola with the Chiesa di Santa Croce and the Convento of San Bartolomeo, but also the Castle of Gaiche and Greppolischieto with the little church of San Lorenzo of the fourteenth century. In Pietrafitta instead is to visit the Abbazia dei Sette Frati enclosing the romantic church and the adjacent monastery with beautiful courtyard.

Tuoro sul Trasimeno, between Umbria and Tuscany, is a medieval village that is situated on the northern shores of Trasimeno Lake, on the slopes of Mount Castelluccio.
